Welcome to My Blog
Welcome to my blog.
In April 2017 I ran my 100th marathon in Zurich,
Switzerland. At least I thought I
had. It subsequently transpired that I
had actually run my 100th marathon in Marseille, France nearly one month
earlier, meaning that I had messed up one of the more notable achievements in
my life to date. This does not bode well
for my wedding day…
The minor cock up described above is indicative of how a
number of the 100 marathons unfolded and persuaded me that it would be worthwhile
recording the journey to the 100, at least as far as I could remember it. The book, “How Not to Run 100 Marathons
and Other Stories” (https://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Not-Run-100-Marathons/dp/0244412073/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1538561380&sr=8-2&keywords=nicholas+turner+how+not+to+run),
was published in September 2018 and has done reasonably well, although certain
of the stories may result in me being ostracized by my family. My return home at Christmas will confirm the
position.
Since completing the 100, much to the annoyance of various
people (including my long suffering family), I have continued to run marathons
(which I said would stop on completion of the 100). I can’t really explain why this is or why my
obsession began in the first place. My
best effort at self-analyzing this is that running provides an outlet from my
day-to-day existence, which has at times been very stressful. When I’m out on the road, nothing else
matters and I can let my mind work on solving issues which may seem insurmountable
and provide perspective. This has helped
me through countless difficult situations.
My job, as a corporate lawyer, also requires me to be responsible and
organized and I think that the chaotic approach to the marathons has been my subconscious
efforts at a backlash against the pressure cooker of the office. That said, my working life bears no resemblance
to the lawyers in Suits (nor does it carry the life and death connotations of
medicine) - the most exciting event on some days can be a jammed photocopier - so
perhaps I should not put too much store in this excuse for my self-inflicted travails.
This blog will record my continued love affair with marathons. I now have a wonderful “significant other”, Gill, in my life which has made for much smoother marathon experiences and I therefore can’t promise a roller coaster of catastrophes outside the runs themselves, but hopefully some of the adventures may inspire readers to visit (and maybe even run in) some of the locations described. Much to my annoyance, I am also getting old and years of abuse are finally starting to catch up with my body – I have had several weeks out with a variety of injuries this year, the first time this has happened for over a decade - so this may be a short blog…
